An Afternoon with My Daughter

Being a Wedding and Lifestyle photographer, people think that I always take pictures of my daughter. Truth is, I wish I took more of her. I have major mom-guilt in this area and know that I need to take more pictures and treasure her when she is this small. Last Christmas, I even forgot to take her Christmas pictures. I felt like a terrible mom. She just turned three about a week ago and I am in awe of how much she has grown already. Whenever I think of taking pictures of her, I think that I have to get her dressed up and do her hair and get her all dolled up. But really, all I want to capture is the raw and honest moments of my baby.

This is my afternoon with my daughter.

As soon as I took my camera out, she said, “Mom, are we taking selfies?” Selfies have become our nightly routine and she looks forward to it every evening. I told her that Mommy was going to follow her around and take pictures. So what’s the first thing she does? Hide behind the curtain in the dining room.

Then she was really intrigued by me following her with the camera and wanted to pretend to hide.

My daughter wants to make faces at me and see herself on camera.    She then decides that she wants fruit and will sit at our coffee table and eat.

The day before we went to the supermarket and to get her to stay with me and behave, I bribed her with a cupcake, so now she is asking for it and I told her no because I didn’t want her to have it. Then came the meltdown.

So to stop her from crying I gave in and let her go to the refrigerator. She was very excited to get her cupcake.  She was all too excited to eat her cupcake! Next she wanted to play with her puzzles. She has been able to do them upside down as well in very little time!

Aubrey lets me know she’s done by sitting on top of her puzzle. She asks for her apple juice and is tired!

Now time for her to relax and to watch cartoons!

These photos really help me to remember to cherish all of the little moments. It’s great to have professional family pictures done, but it’s also nice to see my daughter in her element, at home, being her playful self!

How often do you photograph your child(ren)?
