Doughnuts and Life

Kids holding doughnuts over their eyes. Can we get doughnuts tomorrow morning, Mama, and eat them on the beach?”

“Of course, sweet girl! Sounds good to me.”

As we sat on the dewy sand, enjoying a doughnut date with the seagulls, I was reminded of the sweetness life has to offer to us daily. I was reminded of how each one of us wakes up with choices to make throughout the day.

Will we be kind or curt? Empathetic or callous? Giving or selfish?

So many options. So many choices. So many decisions.

Will we be authentic or fake? Loyal or unreliable? Lovable or distant?

So as I sit, gazing into the depths of the sea, with cold sand encompassing my coral-painted toes, I am reminded of this.

I create my day. I create the life I want to lead. I create the direction I’m going along my journey.

Just as I choose the doughnut with the most sugary colored sprinkles and icing, I can choose this for myself.

What can I do to make life more satisfying? More delightful? More gratifying?

Maybe it starts with delving deep and offering full transparency. Maybe it’s choosing kindness and filling up everyone I encounter on my path with sweet measure and grace. Maybe it’s letting go of the past and looking only ahead to today.

One thing I know, in the depths of my being, is choosing the rainbow-colored sweetness and sprinkling it over our souls may be the best sweet treat we can ingest.

So, friends, it’s a new day today, and I’m choosing to allow the sweet taste of kindness not to leave my side while sprinkling it willingly about.
