The Gift of Experience

Santa putting basketball tickets into a stocking.Gift-giving can be stressful. As a mom, you want to make sure your family members are happy with the gift they have received. When I was growing up, my mother always had a rule for giving gifts during the holiday season. Everyone in my immediate family got at the very least four gifts.

A gift you want, a gift you need, a gift to wear, and a gift to read.

We played a game to guess which one was which. This helped me find the perfect gift throughout the years for even the pickiest of recipients. Giving gifts has become my favorite part of the holidays. No matter the celebration, I can always find something that wows.

Now, with my own children, I find it easier to use my mother’s strategy to help find the perfect gifts. However, with limited space to fill with toys and material things, I have had to find alternatives. Unique gifts have become a new trend in my home. A few years ago, I started giving the gift of experience.

Making memories and essentially filling the space in your heart seems like a much better gift than something to fill the space in a home. Here are some unique ways to give the gift of experience this holiday season.

1. Spa Day

Who doesn’t love a spa day?! The perfect gift for anyone needing pampering, there are tons of amazing spas and salons in Westchester to indulge. Groupon always has sales for massages, facials, or other relaxing treatments well within your price limit. You can also find a favorite nail salon and get a gift certificate for a mani/pedi in a pinch.

2. Breweries and Wineries

There are so many local breweries and wineries in Westchester that always do tastings and samplings. For around $40, you can send someone with a date to stay warm in the cold winter. Even better, some places, such as Captain Lawrence, have food to pair with the local spirits.

3. Restaurants

Speaking of food, you can always grab a gift card to a favorite local spot. It is a bit of a last resort for me, as I love to try new places and share what I have found. However, it is just as fun to cook at home. Many meal services deliver prepared foods right to your door, like Feast & Fettle.

4. Tickets

My husband is a huge sports fan. I have been known to grab him a pair of tickets to see some of his favorite teams locally. Grab a t-shirt or hat representing the home team and show your pride to make it special! Don’t forget the Westchester Knicks basketball season is beginning and always a fun time, not too far from home.

The Paramount Theater and Tarrytown Music Hall offer a variety of shows. With affordable tickets and various artists that perform, there will surely be something fun for someone on your gifting list. Whether it’s music, comedy shows, or an off-Broadway rendition, you can find it in Westchester.

Don’t forget you can also gift many unique exercise and art classes! With so many options, we hope this helps you cover everyone on your list.

What unique gifts are you giving this year?
