The Magic of Christmas When Life May Not Feel So Magical

christmas magicWhile watching Elf tonight with my daughter, snuggled up on the couch, the magic of Christmas took over.

For the first time in eight months, our hearts were filled with a joy like no other. We were lost within the magical sense of Christmas and its childlike wonder.

After the long year of 2020 being filled with many disappointments, the simplicity of the elves finding joy in the little things was refreshing.

A refreshing moment to just let out an exhale, breathe, and not focus on anything serious.

After this much needed exhale, I realized the magic of Christmas is not lost this year. It may look different within our adult eyes, but in the eyes of a child, the wonder and magic still exists.

So for those longing for Christmas magic, pause for a moment and gaze at any child. The pure magic comes alive within their glowing eyes and hearts as the sparkle within them ignites the magic for our much weighted down adult hearts during this trying year.

I have been thinking about how I can add a little more magic into my life this month. No matter what holiday you may celebrate, a little holiday cheer may be the blessing we are all seeking to get us out of the 2020 funk we so often feel trapped in.

I, for one, need some magic, sparkle, and just about anything right now to lift me up, and I’m starting with the simple:

1. Time with those I love:

I miss my friends and family who don’t live within my household. So, I decided a few weeks ago to create a space within my garage for small, COVID-friendly gatherings. As a family, we spent a few hours cleaning out the garage, donating items we didn’t use, and organizing the bikes and storage stuff along the perimeter.

We then set up a seating area with our outdoor furniture (any chairs will work) and added some small heaters. It is very important to make sure to keep your garage doors open and chairs spaced apart to keep you and your friends and family safe. Wearing masks will always add on a layer of protection and some peace of mind as well.

Honestly, this space has been a blessing for me since I was feeling really disconnected from friends and family. If your garage is filled to the brim and no room can be made (trust me, I get it ), maybe consider an outdoor area to gather some chairs and relax in the open air with family and friends. Add in a fire pit to keep you warm!

2. Good ole family time:

Playing board games, puzzles, or baking while listening to loud holiday music is always a fast way to lift my spirits. This brightens my day within minutes. It’s simple, filled with fun and lots of laughter!

3. Gift giving over receiving:

The magic of giving fills up my heart beyond measure. This is a financially trying time for so many neighbors across our country, so let’s spread some magic. Donating items (new or gently used) to a local community center to provide holiday gifts for a family, volunteering at your local food pantry, or dropping off food items in need are all simple ways to add some magic to a holiday.

4. Love. Just spread the magic through love. You can’t go wrong!

As I sit and watch this silly movie and laugh with my daughter, the magic of Christmas and spreading cheer fills my heart up with joy and reminds me to let the magic spread out to others through one simple blessing…love.

May the magic of Christmas lift your spirits and fill you up with love.
