Out With the Old in With the New Design Trends

A design trend kitchen and eating area. Trends will always come and go, and they are not something that needs to be followed. If you like something that isn’t considered “trendy,” I want to start by saying that’s ok! When it comes to our home, we choose to decorate it how we want. Our home is a reflection of us and our taste. I am not one to always follow an up-and-coming trend, but as a real estate agent, I enjoy the ever-changing trends within the market.

Following design trends is important when maximizing the value of my home and the homes I am selling or helping people purchase. With that being said, let’s look at some of the home design trends for this new year.

1. Paint and Wallpaper

In past years there has been a continued emphasis on gray. This is great for gray enthusiasts, but I know many others will be happy to hear that this trend is dying. As we move into a new year, you will see more beige and greige tones. The rise in popularity of our old friend beige can also be seen in other areas. This year, we will see more beige furniture and home accents to complement beige/greige walls.

Although wallpaper has been trending for years and is most commonly seen as a tastefully done accent wall, a quality peel-and-stick wallpaper design can elevate any area, especially a bedroom. Aside from accent walls, you will see entire rooms, dare I say, wallpapered again!

2. Wood Tones and Natural Furniture

This year will bring the shift from white kitchen cabinets to wood tones. You will find more traditional unpainted furniture along with natural wood kitchen designs. Natural is in, and many home designers have shifted from the farmhouse look to a more natural modern design, and I am here for it!

Kitchen design has begun to shift to incorporate natural wood islands and shelving. A great way to include natural wood cabinets would be to use two-tone cabinets. Although this is not a new trend, it is still trendy and does not seem to be leaving anytime soon. Using a dark cabinet as your base cabinet and going lighter on top will look amazing and be easier to keep clean and maintain.

3. Moody Colors

Although white is timeless and has a bright and welcoming feel, we will see darker tones in certain living spaces, such as bedrooms, dining rooms, and basements. These moody tones should be used in areas with lots of natural lighting and keep areas with less lightning a lighter color.

4. Rattan and Wicker Furniture and Decor

This trend is one of my favorites! I love wicker and rattan because they can create a warm and cozy space. It also helps to bring texture to any room. I love all the new rattan fixtures. Rattan and wicker lighting can be added to your kitchen and dining areas to create a whole new element to your space.

5. Real Plants

Natural plants have never really gone off-trend but have increased in popularity, and we continue to see more homes filled with various plants. This is one trend that I struggle with because I do not have a green thumb and usually end up killing them. I respect all the plant lovers out there, and I love seeing how plants are incorporated into each living space.

These are my top 5 design trends to look out for this year. Many other trends and styles are making their way into homes this year, but what’s most important to remember is to do you! We all have unique styles that match our personalities, so at the end of the day, do what you love and what makes you happy!
