We all love our cozy little corners of Westchester. There are many things to do and see, places to eat, and parks to visit. Who doesn’t love exploring the county and “finding” the kid-friendly gems! We are spotlighting some of those incredible places so that other moms can take advantage and get a glimpse into the awesomeness that is Westchester! North Salem, New York is a beautiful spot in Westchester County that residents love and appreciate for its rural feel, gorgeous views, and beautiful horse farms. With a population of over 5,000 people, North Salem boasts a safe, small community of mostly single-family homes, which is known to be a great place to raise children.
North Salem also has a close proximity of about 55 miles to New York City. There is access to the Metro North Train using the local Croton Falls, Goldens Bridge, or Purdy’s nearby train stations. Also found in this quaint town is the Titicus Reservoir, known by locals for fishing and is one of the twelve reservoirs in the New York City system. The residents also very much appreciate its highly-rated school district, where class sizes are notably smaller compared to neighboring districts.
Things To Do
The Japanese Stroll Garden and Hammond Museum is the perfect spot to visit if you need a reset and time to reflect and relax. The garden’s tranquil setting is just the spot to take a breath and appreciate nature. The museum has different exhibits that celebrate both Eastern and Western cultures, as well as educational classes that are offered. If nature is your thing, North Salem offers its residents and neighbors access to Sal J. Prezioso Mountain Lakes Park, located at 201 Hawley Road in North Salem. This park has a campsite and hiking trails fit for any adventurer. It also offers fishing, ice skating, and even canoe rentals during open seasons, and one would have to just simply call and book a canoe in advance to enjoy. Five lakes are located here, and hikers will often attest to its beautiful views while traveling through the rugged forest.
My family loves Harvest Moon Farm & Orchard. It is always a favorite place for us to visit, especially in the fall. They have a small section where my kids love visiting the farm animals and a great spot for getting delicious food. You can sit inside or outside at one of the many picnic tables where you can feast and indulge in their delicious apple cider donuts and classic breakfast sandwiches.
Places To Eat
My family loves coming to The Blazer Pub on the weekends for the filling cream of tomato bacon soup, the huge steak fries, and the delicious burgers! If you’re looking for a hearty, family-friendly meal and a relaxing drink, this is the place for you! They even have a jukebox in the back! Reservations are strongly encouraged as it gets very busy!
My friends took me to Hayfields for my birthday last summer, and it was the perfect spot for a summer brunch. The outside backyard garden is filled with beautiful plants, and there are many spots to get comfortable while you breathe in the fresh air and unwind while enjoying your meal from their café. I really enjoyed their chicken tacos and look forward to trying their rose slushies! The bakery is also quite the icing on the cake after a tasty meal!
So, if you’re looking for an excuse to leave the city’s hustle and bustle, consider a trip up to North Salem for the day or even the weekend. With a number of delicious restaurants and options for all food lovers, you can’t beat the selection, and the scenery is an added bonus. It’s a great spot to visit for the whole family or even for a romantic day date.
