Steal These Resolutions: Cheers to a Better Year


resolutionsAfter the year we’ve all had, many of us are too exhausted and too drained to go through the annual New Year’s resolution process. I’ve simplified things and am encouraging you to steal these resolutions.

Focus on your health.

Weight loss is probably the most common New Year’s resolution. But let’s make 2021 about being healthy, and not just physically but mentally too. Meditate, talk to someone, check-in with yourself, don’t let your guard down (COVID is still prevalent!).

Travel somewhere.

Many people vow to travel more in the coming year. After being home for months on end, let’s agree that traveling somewhere, anywhere, is a realistic and exciting goal in the next year.

Take a break.

Many parents have been juggling work from home, remote school, household needs, and so much more. Make 2021 about getting a much needed and deserved break…ALONE.

Thank an essential worker.

The heroes of 2020 were the medical professionals, the teachers, the delivery persons, the store clerks, and many other essential workers who kept the lights on in very uncertain times. Even as we hopefully return to some normalcy this year, let’s not forget to say thank you often.

Show your love.

It still may be a while before we can be physically close together with extended family members and friends, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to show your loved ones you care. Send thoughtful gifts, heartfelt text messages, or simply make sure your friends and family know how much they mean to you.

Support local businesses.

So many restaurants, stores, and other local businesses had a rough year. Don’t forget to support your favorite local businesses even after the worst of the pandemic is over. They will continue to need your patronage.

Create something.

You don’t need to overcommit and take up an entirely new hobby. But create something this year – a new recipe, a piece of art, a story. Let it be a reminder of what you’re capable of, and find pride in the creative process.

Do less.

Resolutions tend to be about doing more – more exercise, cooking, traveling, earning, learning, etc. Throughout 2020, we did a lot less than usual. And guess what? It wasn’t so bad. In the year ahead, continue to scale back on activities or other commitments and don’t feel guilty about it.

It’s a New Year but let’s take the pressure off of being a “new you.” Just be you and marvel that you’ve made it here.
