From “Big Time Magazine Editor” City Girl to Suburban Mom Social Worker: Meet Lauren

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? What did you enjoy doing? What kind of life did you imagine having?

I grew up in New York City with dreams of one day writing for women’s magazines. I was the girl who read every word of every article instead of browsing through the celebrity photos. I served as the Senior Editor of my high school’s women’s issues publication, interned for People magazine, and studied at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication.

I graduated during a recession, at a time when the publishing world was going through major changes. While I appreciated (and still do) that magazines provide informative, fun, and meaningful means to inspire women, I felt compelled to go to grad school to pursue a career in which I would impact women in a different way.

So, I simultaneously pursued a Master of Social Work and a law degree, a path that surely involved a ton of reading and writing, yet for many years left me feeling less than totally fulfilled professionally. It was also a path that ended up (or maybe started off, depending on how you view it) absolutely nonlinear and mostly unexpected. On many levels, though, it led me back to where I’d always wanted to be. Taking risks, accepting that expectations are an illusion, and saying yes to opportunities aligned with my values – and saying no when needed – have made me the professional, parent, and person I am today.

I’m now a proud mom of two, a partner to my wonderful husband, a resident of suburban Scarsdale, an active volunteer in my community and my kids’ schools, an entrepreneur, a therapist, a former immigration lawyer, always an advocate, and, unequivocally, a writer.

Am I who I thought I’d be? In so many ways (I do not take for granted) – yes. The magazine industry has evolved, and so did I.

I can now support women through my counseling practice and media contributions, including articles on community platforms. I’m excited to write about my experiences, share my thoughts, and connect with other Westchester County moms!
