Managing a household takes a lot of time and effort. Some of the household responsibilities seem to take over our lives. One of those is keeping up with the laundry. Does it feel like you can never get caught up on your laundry?

Here are some ways to stay organized and on top of your laundry.

Develop a schedule.

Figure out what works best for you. Maybe one load a day, fold and put away. This way, you ensure that the load you do gets done and put away. Maybe you designate two days a week where you do laundry. Maybe light-colored clothing on Wednesday and dark-colored clothing on Saturday. Whatever it is, write it down. I have a dry erase calendar in my house where we put our activities down, and laundry is an activity!

Pre-sort.

Doing this in advance can help save you time. There are some laundry baskets that you can purchase that say lights/darks to make it easy for yourself as you are throwing things in the hamper. The earlier you do this, the easier it is to throw the laundry in the wash.

Get the kids involved.

It is never too early to let your children begin helping you with the laundry. I would suggest putting a laundry basket in their room, in their closet, or in the bathroom so that they know where their laundry is supposed to go. Getting your kids involved early on helps them to take responsibility. If your kids are older, you can assign them a larger role in doing laundry.

Pre-treat stains.

I have a pre-treat stain remover in my bedroom. So as soon as I take something off and it has a stain on it, I spray it before it goes into the hamper. This saves me a lot of time on laundry day. Pre-treating a stain right away also helps to preserve my clothes.

Use a mesh bag for socks.

Why is it that we go in with a pair of socks whenever we do laundry and always come out with only one? Putting all of the socks in a mesh bag will help keep all of your socks together, so you don’t lose them.

Know how long each cycle lasts.

Knowing how long your cycle lasts makes doing laundry a little easier. My regular cycle lasts 25 minutes, so I set a timer for myself to switch the laundry to the dryer as soon as it is done, and I can put in another load of laundry.

Staying on top of your laundry can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be! Follow these tips for keeping up on your summer laundry.
