For Valentine’s Day, a Gift from the Heart

A woman donating blood. It’s impossible to make it through February without seeing the color red or the image of hearts in every store window or browser background. Normally card-company holidays make my eyes roll a bit, but I’ve learned through two years of a pandemic that we definitely need things to celebrate.

February, which is often the coldest month of the year despite being the shortest, is where Valentine’s Day comes in. Many people love the mid-month warmth brought by giving and receiving cards, chocolates, and flowers. (And I’ll take any excuse to eat a box of dark chocolates without having to share).

We are urged by card and candy companies to make purchases that convey our love for each other. My son will arrive home from school with a pile of tiny folded pieces of paper adorned with images of Spiderman or Mirabel Madrigal and a heart-shaped lollipop attached.

But this year, I propose that we make our love for each other, our care for one another known through something other than cards and chocolate and long-stemmed roses. (Although those are good, too). My idea is still red and involves the heart. This year, I propose we take the time to donate blood.

The Red Cross has recently declared a “blood crisis” amidst the Omicron surge. Now, more than ever, our country needs blood donors.

To find out where you can donate or if you are eligible, you can go to the Red Cross website to find a blood drive near you. (And, of course, check with your doctor or medical professional if you have questions or concerns).

This Valentine’s Day, I will roll up my sleeve and provide a pint of blood for someone who needs it. I might just get a cookie and a red heart sticker, too.
