women-owned businessesThis month we celebrate and honor women worldwide, so we thought it would be interesting to feature some women-owned businesses around Westchester County. While searching and asking around, I found out so many women entrepreneurs live around us. We have selected the women who live and have their business around the Scarsdale and Eastchester area, although there are many women-owned businesses around Westchester County.

There are photographers, chefs and cooks, bakers, party-oriented businesses, community services, health and wellness services, education and cultural services, and many more. Women are doing it all!

Wellness and Health

Marlene is a Sr. Nuclear Cardiology Technologist with a passion for living clean. She is a certified boxing instructor who enjoys teaching to promote fitness. Marlene is an independent Arbonne consultant which aligns with her love for nutrition and beauty products. Sweat with Marlene by scheduling a boxing session or sit down and discuss daily nutrition and beauty.

Hanna is an immigrant working mom, team leader at work, and registered yoga teacher. She loves yoga and coffee. This year, she started her business, offering group and private yoga classes on zoom to all ages and levels. She has been hosting online events to keep people united throughout the pandemic and hopefully will host in-person events once everything resumes normality.

“The reason I started my business was as simple as I just wanted to help people who are facing roadblocks as I did before or I am facing right now. As an immigrant, non-native speaker, female and Asian, I’d like to bring yoga wisdom to real-life practice, so it can help people like us with the challenges we face in real life.”

She is a certified personal trainer with more than eight years of experience. She primarily works with women in lower Westchester, specifically Scarsdale and Eastchester, looking for guidance on achieving a healthier lifestyle through exercise and nutrition. Her specialties include strength training for women, prenatal/postnatal, weight loss, muscle building, flexibility/mobility, posture correction, and butt sculpting through exercise.

She is a local mom and woman from Eastchester, who is also a dental hygienist, and together with her friend Hetal, from Ardsley, created a boutique dental staffing agency last year back in February. Their services are offered on the go. They cater to offices in the tri-state area that need both temporary and permanent coverage. 

She is an LCSW/Reiki Master/Hypnotherapist/RYT/LFYO-2. She has a healing center in Eastchester called The Temperance Center, located at 453 White Plains Road, Suite 201/203. At her center, she offers many services such as acupuncture, massage, craniosacral therapy, and soon Qi-Gong classes. She also has intuitive offering healings/readings at the center. She offers psychotherapy, reiki/quantum reiki/lightbody healings hypnosis, LifeForce yoga, restorative yoga, meditation, weekly guided channeling meditation groups, and a monthly manifestation group.

She is the owner of My Goodness Health, which offers holistic health and nutrition coaching and personal training. She moved to Scarsdale in 2016 and launched her business in 2018. She is originally from the UK and has lived in Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong. She supports international as well as local clients.

She has a pelvic floor physical therapy practice that offers services to women all over lower Westchester. Her office is in Eastchester but also provides at-home visits.

Photography

She is a maternity, newborn, and family photographer servicing NYC, Westchester County, Bergen County, New Jersey, and other surrounding areas.

Aline Hoffmann is the owner of Beautifully Captivated Photography. She provides in-home newborn sessions as well as cake smash and maternity photoshoots throughout Westchester County.

Maria is a local mom from Eastchester. She is a photographer who specializes in family photo sessions as well as newborn, baby, and kids portraits. 

She is located in Eastchester and specializes in family photography, and has experience of more than 10 years in this business. 

She is a fashion, portrait, and lifestyle photographer born and raised in Yonkers. She started shooting professionally at 11 years old, and she is currently 23. She shoots everything from engagement photoshoots, proposals, weddings, family photo sessions to fashion and corporate headshots.

She is a photographer originally from Croton-on-Hudson. She specializes in lifestyle photography but also as a high-end retoucher. She loves photography and has been in this business since 2003, working from major campaigns, editorial assignments to photoshooting local families in their backyards, and loves all of it. She is located in the picturesque Northern Westchester but travels around the county and to the city to work on different commissions. She is about to open a studio in Peekskill.

Her business is Angela Sparkles. She sells jewelry and accessories. She started her business four years ago as a pop-up vendor in Pottery Barn and Athleta. Because of the pandemic, she’s doing only online vendor events. She caters to people of all ages.

“My goal is to make everyone happy by having beautiful jewelry at great prices! The jewelry is trendy and very popular!”

Food and Entertainment

She is an Eastchester local mom of three who started her business in 2010. It is a mobile spa business called SPAH for Spa Parties at Home. They set up the spa for little girls and teenagers in different places such as the client’s house but also hotels, restaurants, girl scout cottages, and even schools. They offer several packages, which include a bath/body craft project, for example, bath bombs which the girls can make. Some of the services provided are nails, facials, hair, and massages.

Together with her sister-in-law, Fran started her business in 2009 on her in-law’s garage and have now a storefront in Tuckahoe. They create custom candy buffets for all sorts of parties. They have even done celebrity events such as Jingle Ball at MSG for the past three years. They are very excited for things to go back to normality to continue working on bringing joy and happiness to girls all around.

She is a mom of two kids, local to Westchester County, who loves to bake, and is the owner of Confections by Cori.

“I will never be that friend who shows up at your door with a bottle of wine, but I will always have one of my delicious confections in hand! I love to make others happy with my baked treats for any holiday, occasion, event, or “just because.”

Together with her husband, she owns I have No Place Like Home, LLC, a company that caters services of a personal chef trained in Madrid, Spain, and other places. They normally do big events for up to 200 people, but with the pandemic, they have looked for creative ways to keep their business going, such as Tuesday delivery, smaller events, and continue working on farmer’s markets from spring to fall. They are based in Rivertown but serve all of Lower Westchester.

She is the owner of Duck Donuts, located at 805 Mamaroneck Ave in Mamaroneck. Together with her husband, she opened the store in January of 2020 and recently celebrated their “1-year in business” anniversary. They make fresh, warm, made-to-order donuts using a variety of delicious toppings. They also do catering for special events, parties, school events, office functions, etc., and can provide a variety of items, including donut platters, minis, special packaging, and breakfast platters.

She has a shooting range, gun shop, and training school in Mount Vernon. They are a woman-owned family business and have been in the firearms business forever. They cater to all individuals looking for training and licensing for protection or for sport. 

Community Services

Amreeta Niveknand-DeMayo

She is a resident of Eastchester with her husband, two children, and pets, who is also an attorney who graduated from Fordham Law in 2003. In her legal career, she has prosecuted child abuse and neglect, litigated administrative hearings, and assisted the homeless population in NYC as a former attorney with the NYC Administration for Children’s Services and the NYC Department of Homeless Services. Her legal practice focuses on real estate law and estate administration. She works with individuals and families seeking legal assistance to buy or sell real estate or those wanting to draft a will or probate an estate.

She grew up in Eastchester and now lives in Bronxville. After dancing professionally for many years, in July of 2019, she opened the doors to The PR Social, a public relations agency that celebrates the people doing good things in the world, with a specialized focus on the arts. From ballet dancers at the world’s top companies to theater, opera fitness, yoga, and more, her roster of clients is growing quickly, and it has been such a joy to watch the creativity and resilience of them all during this pause that the arts community has experienced.

Ellen Del Colle is a Westchester native who has been a writer and researcher for about four decades. By undertaking only one-to-two projects simultaneously, Ellen provides concierge service to ensure each client’s goals are met or exceeded. She traces ancestors and locates missing heirs, applying her investigative skills to prove family relationships. In recent years she has been a research consultant for the Emmy-award-winning TV series, “Who Do You Think You Are?” 

Culture and Education

Marisa Horowitz-Jaffe has been studying, teaching, and living ancient history for over 25 years. Her background includes a double Bachelors degree in Egyptology and Roman Archaeology from The University of Michigan, and a Master’s degree from Harvard University in Art and Museum Education. She spent two decades working in elite NYC art museum education departments and now enjoys bringing her own artifacts and mobile museum to present enrichment programs in schools, libraries, and community groups. She also offers private VIP small group tours at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. 

She is the owner of a highly recommended preschool on local groups called “A Child’s Dream,” located in New Rochelle. She started the school when she was 26 years old with then teaching assistant and for the last 3 years, she has been the sole proprietor. This year her school will celebrate 20 years of teaching children from ages 2-5.

“We have the most wonderful families who have helped us build a terrific learning community. I have an incredible team of women that have been with me for many, many years. This year dealing with a pandemic and running a small business has taught me that loyalty and trust are everything. My team is loyal to the core, and together we are making it through the pandemic.”

Lissette Acevedo 

She owns a small painting and contracting business named Ultimate Painting and Contracting. They opened in 2009 and do all facets of painting from interior and exterior, both residential and commercial. They power wash and do deck staining. They are licensed and insured. 

An Interior Designer with 20+ years in the business of helping people create the home of their dreams. In 2003, she started her own design firm and later had a retail showroom which she closed a year ago due to the business climate. She continued to work out of her home and do in-home consultations only. She has designed window treatments, custom upholstery, and custom cabinetry. For some clients, she has helped them decorate their whole house and for others a single room. 

Travel

She is an independent travel agent of Magical Vacations Travel.
