Or perhaps it’s breakfast at home? I asked my mother, a celebrity chef muse, to give us her recipe:
😋 Fabulous French Toast 😋
Six eggs (can add a 7th if eggs are small)
1/3 cup whole milk or half & half
2 tbsp sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 stick good quality salted butter (cultured is good)
Mix well in a baking pan large enough to hold all the bread. Soak each piece on both sides and leave the bread for a few minutes (or overnight in the fridge) to continue to soak.
Melt half the butter in a frying pan large enough to hold three pieces. Cook on low, so the inside has time to set.
Turn over and cook until the bread puffs up a little in the middle.
Repeat with the rest of the butter and the remaining three pieces of soaked bread.
Sprinkle finished toast with a bit of nutmeg and powdered sugar (both optional but suggested)
“Mom, what would say is the perfect bread for this recipe?”
“I use good quality whole wheat from a baker or supermarket. But really, use what you have on any given day rather than obsess over whether you have the “right” kind. Some people buy challah, which is delicious since it’s an eggy, sweet bread. French toast is a kind of custard, so soaking it well is more important than which bread.”
