What Your ‘Spotify Wrapped’ Says About Your Parenting Style

Mom and daughter dancing.Whether you’re “into music” or not, your musical tastes will probably help inform your offspring, which is why I try to provide my boys with a wide range of songs, styles, and genres. Since birth, they’ve heard everything from classic rock staples, my favorite high school jams, cheesy pop hits, ballads and bangers, Beatles and Britney, Bush and Biggie, Bruce and Beyoncé, and you get the picture.

Chances are you’ve seen the trend of posting your Spotify Wrapped on Instagram. What a handy tool to reveal how cool your musical tastes are (or just how much you really love Taylor Swift)! But if you’re a mom (or dad!), it’s likely that all that your Spotify Wrapped illustrates is how your children have hijacked every facet of your life, even your music.

So I’ve also got a handy little tool: What your Spotify Wrapped says about your parenting style.

If your top most listened-to song is…

“PAW Patrol Opening Theme” by PAW Patrol

You are the Parent-Who-Has-Given-Up. You’ve had it. How often can you tell someone no, stop, or please, not that song again? It only lasts a few minutes, but it will occupy a space in your brain for years to come, ousting your second grade best friend’s phone number. And, at this point, you don’t care anymore! That’s what noise-canceling headphones are for. You’re welcome.

“We Don’t Talk About Bruno” by Carolina Gaitán

You are the Parent-Who-Plays-Dressup. While you’d rather your top song be slightly less Disney, you feel good about this. You don’t see why there can’t be things that kids and adults both enjoy. After the song’s over, you cue up another episode of Bluey and rip into a bag of fruit snacks.

“Baby Shark” by PinkFong

You are the Time-Moves-Too-Fast-Parent. Every night before bed, you watch videos of your kids when they were babies and tear up, wondering where the time has gone. You are comforted by the repetition. You probably still have that trunk of baby clothes or basket of toys your child is way too old for. Just like this song, and now it’s stuck in your head.

“Back in Black” by AC/DC

You are the Accidentally-Cool-Parent. Sure, you’ve played your kid some classic rock in the car, but you never imagined that he would stumble upon this 80s hit and make it his entire personality. You get approving nods from other parents at the birthday party when your kid spots the Alexa and shouts at it to play something other than the Encanto soundtrack. You accept those nods even though you know you really had very little to do with it.

What does your music say about you?

Juliana is an English teacher, aspiring novelist, and mother to redheaded sons. (No, her husband doesn't have red hair. Yes, it was a surprise!) She grew up in Scarsdale and now teaches at her rival high school - Mamaroneck - where she also lives with her (brown-haired) husband, Mike, and their two (orange-haired, according to Noah) sons, Noah (2016) and Simon (2019). When she has a free moment (haha) she is reading something: YA Romance, humorous essays, poetry, thrillers, student work, and, sometimes, her own works-in-progress.

  1. I know a cool dad that dresses all in black and I think his grandkids know the perfect song to pump in the car when your wearing slick black shoes, black jeans and a dapper black shirt.
